How Does the Uni-X ECU Work with Your Lexus GX550?

The Uni-X ECU is a fully plug-and-play, interceptor-style engine management system designed to integrate seamlessly with the factory Lexus GX550 ECU. It installs using a dedicated vehicle-specific wiring harness, requiring no cutting, splicing, or permanent modification to the factory loom. The system can be removed at any time without leaving an electronic footprint.


Fuel Control

Like most modern factory vehicles, the Lexus GX550 is calibrated conservatively from the factory, particularly in fuel delivery. This often results in richer-than-necessary air-fuel ratios under load to account for emissions compliance, global fuel quality variation, and long-term durability.

The Uni-X ECU allows precise fuel trimming only where required, correcting factory compromises rather than applying broad changes. This enables the engine to operate in a more efficient AFR window, improving combustion stability, drivability, and engine longevity. Any additional power gained is the result of improved efficiency rather than aggressive tuning.


Ignition Timing Control

Factory ignition timing strategies are deliberately conservative and typically operate well short of Maximum Brake Torque (MBT), especially in mid-load and transient areas.

The Uni-X ECU enables live, real-time ignition timing optimisation across the entire rev and load range. Adjustments are made while monitoring engine response, allowing precise optimisation of timing at each load site. This results in improved power, stronger torque delivery, and increased fuel efficiency.

When premium unleaded fuel is used, the tune can be calibrated to fully utilise the higher knock resistance, rather than relying on the factory ECU to reactively pull timing after knock is detected.


Throttle Control

The Lexus GX550 uses an advanced drive-by-wire throttle system where the factory ECU heavily filters pedal input and limits throttle blade opening to manage torque and drivability.

With the Uni-X ECU, throttle behaviour can be recalibrated to allow greater throttle opening and faster response to pedal input. This removes factory torque dampening, delivering sharper throttle response, improved acceleration, and a more direct connection between driver input and engine output without compromising factory safety systems.


Boost Control

The GX550’s twin-turbo V6 relies on strict factory boost and torque management strategies to protect the drivetrain and meet emissions requirements.

The Uni-X ECU provides full 3D boost pressure control across the entire operating range of the engine. Boost pressure can be adjusted precisely based on RPM, load, throttle position, and driving conditions.

This allows boost to be increased or reshaped where appropriate while maintaining safe air-fuel ratios and exhaust gas temperatures. The result is improved boost response, stronger mid-range torque, and consistent power delivery without triggering factory intervention or compromising reliability.

Map Select

The Uni-X ECU supports up to five selectable maps, allowing the driver to switch between different calibrations to suit fuel quality or driving conditions.

Examples include:

  • High-octane performance map

  • Low-octane or remote-area fuel map

  • Daily driving / economy map

  • Valet or immobiliser map

  • Performance or off-road-specific map

Maps are selected via an external switch and are fully customisable by an authorised Uni-X dealer.


Fuel Type, Knock Control, and the Lexus GX550 ECU

The Lexus GX550 factory ECU uses an active knock control strategy that continuously advances ignition timing toward Maximum Brake Torque until knock activity is detected, at which point timing is reduced to a safe level.

This allows the engine to operate on a wide range of fuel grades, but it is a reactive system. The ECU responds after knock occurs rather than preventing it proactively.

Fuel trims are managed via oxygen sensor feedback, meaning changes between fuels such as 91, 95, 98, or E10 typically result in relatively small adjustments. Ignition timing, however, is directly limited by knock feedback under high load.

Unlike factory calibration, which reacts after knock or torque intervention occurs, the Uni-X ECU allows proactive control. This results in stronger, more consistent power delivery, earlier torque, and improved drivability while retaining all factory safety systems.

Multiple drive modes are retained and individually calibrated, including Sport+, Sport, Normal, Custom, Comfort, and Eco.


Momentum GT High-Flow Intake System

To support the increased airflow and boost control provided by the Uni-X ECU, the Stage 2 package includes a Momentum GT intake system engineered specifically for the GX550.

This system is designed to move the maximum volume of cool, high-quality air into the engine while maintaining excellent filtration and long service intervals.

The one-piece sealed intake housings are constructed from heat-resistant XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene), offering excellent resistance to heat soak and long-term durability. The system uses a patent-pending filter-to-housing interface that reduces part count and simplifies installation.

Two large clear sight windows allow for easy filter inspection without disassembly.

High-quality, computer-designed, dyno-tuned intake tubes ensure optimal airflow while maintaining precise fitment. Premium clamps and silicone bellows are used throughout to ensure a secure, leak-free installation.

Momentum GT intakes are engineered with fewer components, making installation quick, simple, and repeatable.
