How does a UnichipQ4 work with your NISSAN V8 Patrol?

Fuel Control: As 99.99% of factory cars come tuned VERY RICH, it makes sense to lean the fuel mixtures back to a safe area that enables the car to make good power without wasting fuel. With the Unichip we can blend the fuel trims only were required to correct the mass production “errors” allowing the engine to run more efficiently and ultimately last longer, the extra power produced is just a bonus!!

Ignition Timing Control: As with fuel control factory cars come with the ignition timing a long way away from ideal. With the Unichip we can optimise the ignition timing across the entire rev range, with Unichip “LIVE” timing and fuel adjustments are possible, this is the only true way of determining the best possible timing and fuel setting at each load site. Ultimately this will give the car more power, more torque and greater fuel economy. If the owner chooses to run premium unleaded fuel we can set the tune to take full advantage of the higher quality fuel.

Throttle Manipulation: Many new cars are “Drive by wire” meaning the throttle is now electronically controlled via the E.C.U. Not driven by a cable any more. With this control manufacturers are now controlling the amount of throttle opening and limiting throttle opening in some cases up to 75%!

Tuning Fuel Type and Your Y62.

A common misconception, even among some tuners, is how the factory ECU in Nissan Patrols manages ignition timing and fuel control. The ECU uses an active knock control system, meaning it constantly advances timing until knock (pre-detonation) is detected, then adjusts it to a safe level while targeting Maximum Brake Torque (MBT) without knock.

While this system allows the engine to adapt to various fuel grades—whether it’s 91, 94, 95, or 98 octane—it does so reactively, rather than proactively. Changing fuel grades doesn’t override the system; instead, the ECU compensates by advancing or retarding timing based on the fuel’s knock resistance. For instance, at wide-open throttle (WOT), ignition timing typically maxes out around 22-23 degrees with E10 or 98 octane and 18-19 degrees with 91 octane. Even if extra timing is added to the ECU map, the system will still cap timing to safe levels at WOT.

Fuel control works similarly, relying on oxygen sensors to regulate trims. Switching between non-ethanol fuels and E10 results in minimal changes—E10 typically increases fuel trims by just 3-4%, which is negligible.

While the factory ECU is capable of adapting to different fuel types, the best results come from tuning the engine specifically for the fuel you’re using. This ensures optimal power, torque, and efficiency without relying on reactive adjustments after knock detection.

Key Points:

You can run any fuel grade, but the ECU will adapt only after detecting knock or pre-detonation. The factory system relies on knock detection to adjust ignition timing, meaning the engine responds to knocking rather than preventing it altogether.

If tuned on 98 octane, switching to E10 or 91 will trigger the ECU to compensate only after detecting knocking or pinging. Once the ECU switches to the low-octane map, it will remain there until either an ECU reset is performed or it detects no knock—typically after running 1-2 tanks of 98 octane fuel.

  • There will be a power reduction on 91 octane (around 10-15 kW at WOT), but this is unlikely to be noticeable during everyday driving.
  • E10 may reduce fuel economy by 3-4%, but the cost savings per litre often offset this small loss in efficiency. However, E10 is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time. This can lead to long-term issues like injector problems or premature wear of spark plugs due to the ethanol content in the fuel.
  • Optimising the tuning with something like the Uni-X ECU ensures better results. The Uni-X ECU isn’t limited by the factory system, as it communicates directly with engine sensors, enabling precise control over fuel, ignition, and timing. This allows the engine to achieve higher power, torque, and fuel economy without triggering knock protection. Proactively tuning for the fuel type eliminates the need for reactive adjustments to knock.
  • For example, tuning a Y62 Patrol for 95 octane can deliver better results than running 98 octane on a non-tuned engine. This approach yields higher power and torque, reduces throttle input needed for acceleration, and results in significantly greater fuel savings. All of this is achieved in open-loop tuning, allowing precise adjustments for specific fuels and octane ratings. When the Y62 detects poor quality fuel from knock activity and retards the timing, it doesn’t just feed the ignition timing straight back in when “good fuel” is used, it takes some time before it finds the high octane ignition table again. When the tune is optimised with the Uni-x ecu this delay in timing correction is avoided completely, keeping the timing at its peak.
  • While the factory ECU is designed to handle different fuel types, optimizing the tune for a specific fuel grade offers far better performance and efficiency. By tailoring the engine’s settings with tools like the Uni-X ECU, you can unlock the full potential of your vehicle, ensuring it runs smoothly, economically, and with maximum power.

A urethane plug is also included for those cold weather applications where you want to block the auxiliary air scoop. A large, clear sight window is used for a hassle-free filter inspection and an aggressive style.

This System uses a CAD designed, dyno-tuned, roto-molded intake tube to achieve maximum power gains while maintaining a perfect fit.

Huge 7-Layer Performance Air Filter: The Momentum GT intake is designed around a pre-oiled, large 9″ oval 360 degree radial flow performance air filter with 5-layers of progressive cotton media with 2-layers of progressive synthetic media providing 99.7% cumulative efficiency for maximum filtration. (US PAT 06811588) The unique air filter to housing interface (patent pending) allows for maximum filter size which increases the available air volume while simplifying the installation process.

Custom Silicone Crankcase Vent Adaptor: A custom reinforced silicone crankcase vent adaptor is included to provide a clean finished look to the intake.

Dyno Results for Package 4 (Stationary Exhaust Note)
